The use of drugs in sports is not new. For example, hundreds of years ago, Greek athletes used magic mushrooms to prepare for their Olympics.
Today athletes use different drugs to make them stronger and faster.
One of the biggest shocks of the 1988 Games in Seoul, Korea, came after the men´s 100 m final. Tests showed that the winner, Canada´s Ben Johnson, had taken illegal drugs. Steroids were found in his blood. As a result, he lost his gold medal, was sent home and was not allowed to take part in international competions for two years. Many people were deeply shocked. One of them was America´´s star athlete Carl Lewis. He thought it was time to do something against this problem. So he and many others have taken part in anti - drugs campaigns. As a result, more athletes have been tested, more have been sent home and have had to pay a lot of money. Today, drugs are still a problem. But it is good to know that there are lots and lots of excellent athletes who do not take drugs - they simply work hard for their succees.
