Even the climate cooperated. The Annual summer drought shrank the streams, exposing deposits of the gold-bearing gravel called bars. These had formed during high water whrever the current was slack: opposite bends in the river channel, behind boulders, and the potholes in the stream bed. Gold had settled with gravel. Heavier than the sand, it worked its way into the cracks and cavities in or near bedrock. Receding water opened these spots to the crude tools of the early miners. Other deposits were found in ancient channels that had been left dry following changes in the stream´s course

Rewards were sometimes extraordinary. One lump of gold unearthed at Sonora weight twenty-eight pounds; eight other nuggets from the same district exceeded twenty pounds. A small group of friends from Monterey, aided by hired Indians, took two hundred and seventy pounds from the Feather River in seven weeks. The first five prospectors to reach the Yuba River gleaned seventy-five thousand dollars in three months. In ten days one soldier off on a furlough picked up fifteen hundred dollars. These strikes and similar ones in ´49 abd even ´50 were exceptions; yet eveb those unoriginal souls who clung near the familiar bars at Coloma, the site of Marshall´s discovery, are said to have averaged tweenty-five to thirty dollars a day, at a period when skilled labour elsewhere in California comanded about three dollars daily. Under such conditions, a man did not mind standing in icy water all day while a hot sun beat on his head, his shoes turned to pulp, and his stomach, assaulted with insufficient amounts of monotonous food, sent forth calls of distress.
